Banglashe’s Commerce Secretary Dies!

Commerce Secretary Mahbubur Rahman dies of malaria at the age of 58. The ministry’s report holds that he was admitted at the Square Hospital in Dhaka, Bangladesh on Monday after his blood platelet count dropped drastically and later breathed his last at around 6:25am today.

According to doctors, Mahbubur had been suffering from malaria and other complications for a long time.

Report shows that he was in Yaoundé, Cameroon for the WTO ministerial conference last month and it is alleged that during his stay in Cameroon, he may been beaten by mosquitoes with an infectious inoculum and also in Bangladesh as the country equally has malaria transmission.

Mahubur’s demise has evoked comments as some Malaria Research scholars have mentioned that; malaria kills and the next vulnerable group after pregnant women and children are mid and upper level workers, who live in good protected houses, are well clothed, drive good cars but attend funerals in villages. The mosquitoes have also changed habits and now also bite outdoors and no longer indoors. They also bite earlier in the evening rather than late at night. There is an urgency to act and the time is now. Government and civil society need to demonstrate political will, translated simply as “increased funding for health”.

Mahbubur Rahman joined the Bangladesh Civil Service (Customs and Excise) cadre in April 1994 as an assistant commissioner under the National Board of Revenue, Internal Resources Division of the finance ministry.

He served in various customs houses, customs, excise and VAT commissionerates and at the National Board of Revenue in roles including deputy commissioner, joint commissioner and additional commissioner until December 2010.
